Hello, I’m Mary Katherine Burbach. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I work with adult individuals and couples. I have experience working with a wide range of concerns including trauma, relationship challenges, marital distress and conflict, desire for deeper personal growth, depression, anxiety, and issues of self-worth.
I believe in the value of a holistic approach to counseling, addressing the mind, body, and spirit, and how each influences the others. The work I do with clients focuses on learning how to attend to ourselves and one another deeply and with gentleness. I welcome authentic engagement of faith and spirituality issues if they emerge naturally during the counseling process, and have specific training in incorporating Christian faith into the counseling process when desired by the client. One primary way I approach therapy is by exploring how our early attachment relationships affect our current well-being and personal development. When working with couples, I practice Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) which focuses on helping couples foster a secure bond and deeper connection between one another.
I also practice Internal Family Systems (IFS) techniques that tell us that we all have many different parts inside of us that tend to be in conflict with one another, and by befriending and healing these parts, we can find greater harmony within ourselves. I am an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) trained clinician, which is a type of psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.
The counseling environment is one that will emphasize openness, genuineness, warmth, and safety. I want to engage each courageous person in my office with compassion and curiosity, and help you learn to do the same with yourself. I am passionate about helping my clients live more connected, whole-hearted, hope-filled lives.
When I’m not at work, I enjoy spending my spare time with my husband of over 12 years, and our 3 little loves, who fill our days with joy, wonder, and a lot of noise. I also love to drink coffee, enjoy the outdoors, cook colorful foods, and listen to a good 80s tune.
I attended Elon University for my undergraduate degree in Human Services before earning my Master of Arts from Liberty University in Marriage and Family Therapy. In addition to my academic training, I have completed the Community Resiliency Model Skills Training through the Trauma Resource Institute, designed to help adults and children track their own nervous systems in order to bring the body, mind, and spirit back into greater balance. I also have training in treating complex trauma with Internal Family Systems (IFS). I have completed training in the Simplicity Parenting Model, which helps parents create secure connections with their children. In addition to these post-graduate trainings, I have advanced training in and am working towards becoming a certified EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) practitioner, and I am a Prepare & Enrich facilitator.
